Origin

Loyola Degree College’s journey is woven with vision, faith, and transformation—a story that speaks of generous foundations and a mission to serve.

Early Beginnings (1979)
The college was founded in 1979 by the Sri Y. S. Raja Reddy Educational Trust. From its inception, it was affiliated with Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, and committed to serving students—especially from rural areas—by offering courses in Science, Arts, and Commerce in both Telugu and English media.

Pulivendula, located in the Rayalaseema region, has long needed access to high-quality higher education. Loyola Degree College was intended to bridge that gap, particularly for students—male and female—from remote and underprivileged backgrounds.

The Visionary Proposal & the Jesuit Experiment (1993–1998)
In a pivotal moment, Late Chief Minister Sri Y.?S. Rajasekhara Reddy—himself an alumnus of Andhra Loyola College, Vijayawada—proposed that the degree college (and the associated polytechnic) be entrusted to the Andhra Jesuits, believing that their educational ethos would best serve students holistically.

In 1993, with the guidance of the Fr. General of the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits began administering the institutions on an experimental basis. This trial phase, spread over several years, allowed the Jesuit management to gradually assume academic, administrative, and financial responsibility, while ensuring a smooth transition for all stakeholders.

By 1998, the Jesuit leadership formally decided to take over full responsibility of both the degree college and polytechnic, marking a new chapter of committed Jesuit stewardship.

Transfer to Loyola Educational Society & Name Change (1999)
In 1999, the Government of Andhra Pradesh approved the formal transfer of management to the Loyola Educational Society, Pulivendula, along with all assets, properties, and staff.

Concurrently, the government permitted the renaming of the institution from YSRR Degree College to Loyola Degree College (YSRR), Pulivendula, thereby aligning its identity with the Jesuit educational tradition.

Growth, Impact & Infrastructure
Under Jesuit management, Loyola Degree College experienced remarkable growth:
- Student strength rose from around 700 to 1,350, with over half being female students.
- In terms of academic accomplishment, the results improved year after year, reflecting enhanced discipline, rescheduling of the academic calendar, and better student–faculty synergy.
- Loyola now counts among the top 10 institutions under the Sri Venkateswara University jurisdiction.

Parallel improvements were made in infrastructure:
- Additional classrooms and expansion of existing facilities
- A new and spacious library building
- A multipurpose hall and a cycle-shed for staff
- Two new labs—Chemistry and Physics—in addition to existing labs

Broader Mission Context: Loyola Institutions at Pulivendula
Loyola Degree College is part of a broader Pulivendula Mission of Jesuit-run institutions. The Loyola Polytechnic was established in 1980 by the same trust and similarly transitioned to Jesuit administration. Over time, it introduced diploma courses in civil, mechanical, mining, electronics, and computer engineering, consistently upgrading workshops, labs, and infrastructure.

Because of this strong institutional ecosystem, Loyola Degree College benefits from synergy in mission, management, and values.

Present-Day Profile & Reach
- The college has an enrolment of over 3,098 students.
- It is located at Jesuit Residence, Pulivendula, Kadapa District, Andhra Pradesh.
- The college is recognized for its co-educational environment, strong academic programs, and increasing infrastructure.

Today, Loyola Degree College (YSRR) stands as a beacon of Jesuit education in a region that once lacked robust higher-education options. Its evolution reflects a deep commitment—not just to academic excellence—but to social upliftment, value-based formation, and service to the marginalized.
